All are welcome to take part in the Carl Sandburg College Community Garden’s fourth annual open garden from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 22.

Visitors can tour and learn about features of the garden — including its new raised beds and irrigation system — sample a healthy recipe from Hy-Vee and enter to win a door prize. Spurgeon Veggies will be selling produce and freeze-dried vegetables at the event as well.

Established in 2011 and located near the entrance to the Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., the Sandburg Community Garden produces thousands of pounds of freshly grown food each year that is donated to those in need. Work in the garden is done entirely by volunteers. The garden produced 4,014 pounds of food in 2017.

Most of the garden’s donations last year went to FISH Food Pantry, which serves more than 500 families each month; St. Vincent DePaul food pantry, which serves 100 people each month; LaGrace Hall of Hope, which houses six women in need and helps them to live safe and independently again; and the Salvation Army.
